Since the United States only legalized gay marriage in , it’s easy to consider that the entire country falls on the conservative side of the social scale. However, that could not be further from the truth. Like other countries we’ve had the pleasure of visiting during our years of worldwide expeditions, America is one of those places where you can fully express yourself almost everywhere you go.
A sizable chunk of the citizens of this vast, all-encompassing melting pot permit of LGBTQ relationships (although, sadly, a large number don't!), which means that gay America can be found in every urban area, whether big or small.

Many across the Combined States consider San Francisco to be a “Gay Mecca” due to its large gay society located primarily in the Castro District as well as the city’s relatively liberal attitude towards sex. Until the ’s, though, the Castro was largely a white functional class Irish neighborhood known as “Eureka Valley.” A switch came during Society War II, when many soldiers came to San Francisco and formed queer relationships. These soldiers then stayed in the city after being discharged for homosexuality. In the s, Beat Customs erupted in San Francisco and notoriously rebelled against middle class values, thus aligning itself with homosexuality and helped bring gay society to mainstream attention. In the mid to late s, groups such as the Daughters of Bilitis and the Mattachine Society were born, as good as the Tavern Guild, which was the first openly gay business association. By , there were 50 lgbtq+ or Gayest Cities in AmericaObergefell v. Hodges is a civil rights case in which the Supreme Court ruled that the fundamental right to join is guaranteed to lgbtq+ couples. Decided on June 26, , Obergefell v. Hodges required all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and US territories to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and recognize the marriages of same-sex couples on the same terms and conditions as opposite-sex marriages.
