Nick de la Canal: Let's start off with a really basic question: Why is Charlotte Pride in August when so many cities hold their celebrations in June, and in fact, Pride Month is June in the U.S.?
Liz Schob: Great question, and it's one that we actually get a lot. And there are two answers to that. The first one is Identity is year-round. Pride is days a year. But we do things a little bit differently here in Charlotte. As you mentioned, we have National Pride Month in June. July we have Charlotte Black Pride Month, and in August we contain Charlotte Pride. So, we get to celebrate it all summer long, which is really exciting.

Many festival-goers said they were excited for the annual celebration to return in person after organizers held virtual pride events the last two years.
“After two years, I’m just glad everybody showed up,” said Kevin Brown, who drove from High Point in a rainbow cape and headband to be present Saturday’s festival with family. He said he hoped the festival would break previous attendance records.
Many in the crowd wore their pride best — rainbow tutus, crocheted bikinis, pride headbands, beads and stickers.
While the atmosphere was celebratory, the event came at a moment of political uncertainty for LGBTQ rights in the United States. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade and the federal right to privacy, raising fears that the right to homosexual marriage might similarly be in peril.
