Male gay anime characters
Anime doesn’t often tread is in the direction of gay characters, but several anime and manga creators have managed to slip gender non-conforming and queer coded characters into their media anyways. Here are some of my personal favorites!
Japanese animated media is often known as a prime example of representation gone wrong. From stereotyped portrayals of people of color to blatant disrespect and sexualization of women, anime doesn't always hit the sign when it comes to creating feasible and respectful characters who aren’t men. One place anime doesn’t often tread is in the direction of gender non-conforming characters. However, several anime and manga creators have managed to slip gay and queer coded characters into their media. Here are some of my personal favorites!
1. Najimi, Komi Can’t Transmit (Komi-san wa, Kyomushou Desu) ()
Najimi is a canonically non-binary/gender fluid character in the feel-good business “Komi Can’t Communicate.” Najimi serves as the extroverted finest friend of both Tadano and Komi, the two main characters of the show. Their defining characteristic is their bubbly pers

Since anime encompasses all of Japanese animation, there's a large span of genres and thousands of other character types. That means there are subsections of anime dedicated to telling LGBTQ stories and prominently featuring queer characters. But even in other genres, where you might not expect to see as much representation, like shonen, there are still quite a few examples.

Haku was queer? Genuinely asking, it's been almost 20 years at this point since I watched the part of Naruto he was in 'xD
I don't know if it's crucial to "celebrate" them but I appreciate them when they're there, especially when they querness can't be denied (for example in Sarazanmai)

Queer representation is pretty damn important, but I don’t grasp if celebrating means being elated the character is queer or praising the author for daring make the bold choice of adding a queer character, so I won’t say anything until I know which one is meant by celebrating
