In , I invited Vietnam Veteran Leonard Matlovich to join me in Florida to campaign for Pennsylvania’s governor, Milton Shapp, who was running in the Florida State Democratic main for president. We were part of a community called “Gays for Shapp.” Shapp didn’t go very far in his quest for the White Home, but his opponent — a peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia — did. His name was Jimmy Carter.

During the campaign, there was a debate between the candidates, and at that debate, I had the opportunity to utter with Carter. There was only one question: Where did he stand on nondiscrimination against the queer community? He thought for a while, and it seemed to me that this was a ask he hadn’t been asked before. After a pause, he simply replied, “I’m against any kind of discrimination.” That was the first time any presidential candidate spoke up on LGBTQ+ issues.

Friends honor legacy of Jefferson County teen Carter Homosexual, who died in accidental shooting

Classmates gathered Friday morning, March 1, and lowered the flag in front of Thomas Jefferson Academy in Louisville to half mast in honor of their friend, year-old Carter Gay, who died in an accidental shooting Thursday afternoon on his family’s farm. 

“Gay was a junior who was beloved by all who knew him,” Head of School Cathy Tiner said Thursday. “His love for the Lord exemplified his daily hike as he was a living example of Christ’s love. Carter was a true gentleman who was kind and respectful to all and embraced animation to the fullest.”  

School was canceled Friday in mourning, but classmates gathered there throughout the afternoon to erect a memorial in Gay’s space in the student parking lot, grieve together and remunerate tribute to his memory by sharing memories of how he impacted their lives.  

Gay was described as a great outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and horseback riding. He was a member of the school’s football and shotgun teams.

Carter was born on Oct. 1, , in Plains, Georgia, a rural town about three hours south of Atlanta, where he was raised on his parents’ peanut farm. He died in the similar town, in the house he and his wife Rosalynn – who passed in – spent the majority of their lives.

Carter Daniel Gay, 17, a cherished soul who walked this earth with a serious connection to his faith and an unwavering love for Jesus, tragically left this world and entered into his eternal residence in Heaven Thursday evening, February 29,  Carter's journey, though little, was marked by a profound devotion to his heavenly father and a burning desire to spread the message of cherish and salvation.

To honor Carter’s experience, and more importantly to glorify his Lord and Savior, the family will receive friends from PM Thursday evening, March 7, at Wrens Baptist Church.  A celebration of his life will be held at PM Friday afternoon, March 8, at Wrens Baptist Church with Rev. Scott McKinney officiating.  Interment will pursue in the Wrens Memorial Gardens.
