Reflecting on Calgarys queer history ahead of Pride
Ahead of the Calgary Pride Parade on Sunday, a man whos spent the last 12 years researching the collective is reflecting on Calgarys gay history.
When Calgary Pride Week first started in Central Memorial Park in , it revolved around protest, with attendees fighting for acceptance, protection against discrimination, and raising awareness of the inequalities gay Calgarians faced in everyday life.
They were protesting the evidence that you could be legally discriminated against because of your sexual orientation, explained Kevin Allen, founder and research lead at The Calgary Gay History Undertaking. It was also a moment of AIDS in the group and lots of deaths, so there was a lot of anger and general distaste by the community at a big about gay people in their midst,
Now, he says much of Pride revolves around celebrating, accepting, and loving Calgarys queer community.
Allen adds over the last several years, local organizations have taken some big steps towards improving acceptance.

Calgary Pride proudly serves Treaty 7, on the traditional territory of the Niitsitapi Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), Îyarhe Nakoda (Chiniki, Bearspaw, Wesley) and the Tsuut’ina. This land is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, District 5 & 6 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. This place, where the Elbow river meets the Bow, is recognizable by many names to many people, including Mohkínstsis (Niitsitapi), Wincheesh-pah (Nakoda), Kootsisáw (Tsuu'tina), Otos-kwunee (Cree), and Calgary (English). We acknowledge the Indigenous communities of Turtle Island for both the historic and carried on stewardship and protection of the land we collectively inhabit today. Many nations and people, Indigenous and non, are fortunate to call Moh’kinsstis and Treaty 7 territory our residence. Acknowledging the land is Indigenous protocol, which we honour as a step towards reconciliation and fulfilling our responsibilities as Treaty people. Working alongside all Nations, Indigenous and non, we strive to produce safe spaces where everyone can live openly and authentically.
