Gay Guide to Newcastle

This booklet, which has been compiled by the team at the Students’ Union, contains everything a student needs to know to receive a good head launch being LGBTQ+ in Newcastle. We’re very lucky that we have so many amazing resources in our area, and we can’t stress enough the importance of accessing them if you feel that you need to. Everything from finding some friends at the LGBTQ+ Society to getting regular STI testing is included in this guide.

General Features

Sunderland has taken its own direction in the last five years. Gone are the days when we played copycat seize up to our Ebony & White neighbour. Sunderland now seems to be taking a leaf out of Manchester's book and diversifying itself. The influx of the growing pupil economy has allowed the late night entrepreneurs to cash in and initiate the mid-week booze boom.

"Are we to assume that for some bizarre and unidentified reason Sunderland’s population contains not one unpartnered homo-orientated resident?"

JustPHIL

Now we include the big problem! An unusually hard to know or explain fact. Sunderland used to be a laughing stock as the only city in the UK without a cinema. But worse still: why is Sunderland the only city in the UK not to have a single gay bar?

The only gay in the village?

Hard to believe in today’s multi-cultural climate, that a developed area, with a population ready to drive ,, could not possess a gay bar! Are we to assume that for some bizarre and unidentified reason Sunderland’s population contains not one unpartnered homo-orientated resident?

Few UK cities conjure up such a distinct visual image as Newcastle. Believe Newcastle and you will immediately kickoff picturing buzzing and vibrant nightlife, the iconic Angel of the North statue, brown ale, and of course the people and their super friendly Geordie accent.

But what about ‘gay Newcastle‘, what is on give for LGBTQ+ travellers here?

For months we have been saying we want to explore more of the UK, and so when we were given the opportunity to explore to and disburse a few days in this North East capital, we jumped at the chance!

As always, we couldn’t wait to explore and study all about ‘gay Newcastle’ – but we were also very excited to explore this accepted city in general.

We had a fantastic time, and were surprised by both how thriving the gay scene in Newcastle is, as well as the scope of sightseeing options and activities available.

In our ‘Gay Newcastle Travel Guide‘, we are thrilled to share with you what we got up to, and hope that when you call on, you enjoy it as much as we did!
